Tips for Using Crutches

First, inspect the crutches. Tighten the bolts and screws and insure that the tip, or foot, is on securely and that they are not cracked. Adjust the crutches so they are the correct height for you.

Take it slowly. Stand on your 'good' leg with crutch handles securely gripped. Hold yourself up by using the muscles in your arms. Try not to rest on your underarm area. You will get tired and resort to that sometimes, but try to avoid it as much as possible. Move both crutches out in front a short distance. Keep crutches close to your body. Now lean forward and take a small step, bringing your foot between the crutches again. Repeat.

Give yourself extra time to get places. Take small steps forward. Do not attempt to go backward. To move to the side, move both crutches to the side and take very small steps inside the space between the crutches.

Be extra cautious around wet or soft surfaces. If possible avoid icy areas. If not possible, use very small steps and keep the crutches as close to your body as possible.

Use a backpack to carry items. Do not sling a purse over your shoulder. When (not if) it slides off, it will throw you off-balance and possible cause a fall.

Avoid stairs. If you must use them, go slow and try to have an assistant walk behind you when going up, or in front of you going down, just in case you need help with your balance. Going up stairs, move your foot up one step then raise crutches to that level. Going down, the crutches go first, then your foot. If you are still taking pain medication beware that your balance may not be as good usual. In that case, avoid stairs for sure. Take the elevator.

Be on the alert for tripping hazards. Remember to keep the crutches close to your body and don't 'swing' them out wide where you might 'catch' a table or chair leg, etc.
